Hip Replacement Q&A

What is hip replacement?

The goal of hip replacement is to improve the function and range of motion of your hip joint while relieving pain.

Some common causes of damaged hip joints that may benefit from surgical treatment include:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA)
  • Hip fractures
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Bone tumors

You might also benefit from a hip replacement if you develop a bone infection or you experience abnormal growth, known as dysplasia.

What types of hip replacement are available?

Dr. Pandhi offers both the traditional hip replacement and minimally invasive hip replacement approaches:

Traditional hip replacement

Traditional hip replacement, also called hip arthroplasty, is a type of open surgery that involves removing the injured or diseased parts of your hip and then replacing them with an artificial joint.

Anterior hip replacement

Anterior hip replacement, also known as muscle-sparing hip arthroplasty, is a minimally invasive form of hip surgery that involves Dr. Pandhi replacing damaged bones in your hip joint with an artificial prosthesis.

The anterior approach to hip replacement surgery causes less damage to the muscles and tendons that surround your hip. In addition, anterior hip replacement requires less downtime and leads to a faster recovery.

Am I a good candidate for hip replacement?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for hip replacement, schedule a consultation with Dr. Pandhi. He recommends hip replacement for people who are suffering from hip pain and immobility as a result of arthritis.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Pandhi asks you a series of questions about your symptoms and completes a physical exam. He might also order X-rays or an MRI to get a closer look at your hip joint and the surrounding tissues.

Next, Dr. Pandhi asks you questions about your medical history. During this part of your consultation, make sure to share any allergies you have. You should also let him know about any prescription medications or supplements you’re taking.

If you qualify for hip replacement, Dr. Pandhi gives you a further list of instructions to follow prior to your surgery.
